Fall, Closets, and Other Signs of Personal Growth

The heat finally waved the white flag this weekend and made way for that glorious crisp autumn air. And let me tell you something: I am a fall girl through and through.
I love the cool mornings. I love the leaves putting on their annual color show. I love the fall festivals, the pumpkins, the apple cider, and the perfectly acceptable excuse to wear oversized sweaters while carrying a warm drink. Most of all, I love the gentle ramp-up to the holidays.
For me, fall has always felt like nature's way of saying, "Let's get cozy and get our lives together."
This year, however, fall arrived with an unexpected challenge.
For years, I have been both a clothes hog and a closet hog. No shame in my game. Summer wardrobe? One closet. Winter wardrobe? Another closet. If I wanted a sweater, I simply strolled over to the winter closet. If I needed a sundress, I visited the summer closet. It was a system. An excessive system, perhaps, but a system nonetheless.
Then life went and got all happy on me.
The fiancé and I are now cohabitating, which means I have entered unfamiliar territory: sharing.
Not sharing fries. That's still negotiable.
I'm talking about sharing closet space.
Suddenly, my seasonal migration from one closet to another wasn't going to cut it anymore. This year required strategy. Planning. Perhaps even maturity.
I know. I was alarmed too.
So, I rolled up my sleeves and tackled the great wardrobe transition of 2026. Instead of maintaining separate seasonal kingdoms, I downsized both wardrobes and merged everything into one giant, organized closet.
At first, I dreaded it.
There were piles.
There were decisions.
There were articles of clothing staring at me as if to say, "Remember that event you wore me to in 2014?"
But once I got started, something surprising happened.
I got into it.
Actually, that's not entirely true.
I became slightly obsessed with it.
With each item I set aside, I felt a little lighter. Some pieces hadn't seen daylight in years. Others no longer fit my life, my style, or my reality. And thanks to my new job, I was also able to part ways with much of my professional wardrobe because these days my work attire is pretty standardized.
Translation: I no longer need fifteen different outfits that silently scream, "I'm a serious professional."
The deeper I got into the process, the more freeing it became. What started as a space problem turned into a reminder that sometimes we hang on to things long after they've served their purpose.
Clothes.
Habits.
Old versions of ourselves.
Sometimes letting go creates room for something better.
By the end of the day, I had one organized closet, several donation piles, and a tremendous sense of accomplishment. More importantly, I was reminded why I was willing to make all these adjustments in the first place.
Because I'm in a really happy season of life.
A season that includes sharing space, building a home, and creating a future with my favorite guy.
So yes, I gave up some closet real estate.
But honestly?
I got the better deal.
The sweaters fit, the closet closes, and the guy is a keeper.
I'd call that a successful fall makeover.
