The Joy of Watching Someone Else Geek Out

There comes a point in adulthood when buying gifts gets downright tricky.

Remember being a kid when every birthday and Christmas came with a mile-long wish list? Those days are gone. Most of us have reached that magical stage of life where if we really want something, we just go ahead and buy it ourselves. Need new shoes? Click. Want a new gadget? Ordered. Craving that ridiculous kitchen appliance you'll use twice? It's already in your cart.

So lately, I've become a big believer in giving experiences instead of stuff.

For my fiancé's birthday, I decided to lean into one of his greatest loves: Star Wars.

Now, I enjoy Star Wars. I've watched the movies. I know enough to hold my own in a conversation. But this man? He LOVES Star Wars. We're talking full-on, unapologetic, lifelong fan.

So, I rented an Airbnb with a Star Wars theme.

The photos looked cool online, but honestly, they did not do this place justice.

Not even close.

The amount of detail the owners put into the property was mind-blowing. Every room held some new surprise. The memorabilia, the decorations, the collectibles, the little touches that true fans would recognize immediately. None of it was captured in the listing description.

The moment we walked in, I knew I had hit a home run.

My guy absolutely nerded out.

And y'all, it was glorious.

He wandered from room to room with the wide-eyed wonder of an eight-year-old on Christmas morning. He stopped every few feet to point something out. He examined collectibles like museum artifacts. He grinned so hard I thought his face might get stuck that way.

I found myself doing something unexpected.

Instead of focusing on the Airbnb itself, I was focused on him.

Watching him experience pure joy was every bit as fun, and maybe even more fun, than the gift itself.

There's something special about seeing someone you love light up over something that matters to them. No stress. No responsibilities. No emails. No bills. Just genuine excitement.

That's the magic of experience gifts.

You get the experience, too.

You create memories together. You become part of the story. And if you're really lucky, you get a front-row seat to someone you love being completely, unapologetically happy.

Honestly, those are the gifts that stick.

Years from now, I doubt either of us will remember some random gadget or another pair of shoes. But we'll remember the Star Wars Airbnb. We'll remember the ridiculous amount of memorabilia. We'll remember him geeking out over every square inch of the place.

And I'll definitely remember sitting back, taking it all in, and thinking, "Yep. I hit the target with this birthday gift."

Not because of the Airbnb.

Because of the smile it put on his face.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn't the experience itself.

It's getting to watch someone you love enjoy it.
