The Sassy Sleeper’s Guide to Not Losing Your Mind : your resident night owl with a Law & Order addiction

Listen… I don’t know who needs to hear this, but some of us are out here raw‑dogging life on four hours of sleep and a dream. And by “some of us,” I mean me. I am a horrible sleeper. Not “oh I toss and turn a little” horrible — I mean every third night I sleep like a normal human and the other two I’m basically a raccoon with Wi‑Fi.

And yes, I have terrible bedtime habits. I fall asleep with the TV on (because nothing tucks me in like a good Law & Order episode), and I refuse to silence my phone because motherhood doesn’t clock out at 10 PM. My girl gang? Same boat. We’re all out here trying everything short of witchcraft to get some rest. Sleeping pills, melatonin, a little toddy, going to bed early, staying up late — we’ve tried it all. We’re basically a walking sleep study.

Then The Today Show had the audacity to run a segment on global sleep habits, and suddenly I’m thinking, “Wait… is it too late for me to become a well‑rested woman?” Because let’s be honest: without sleep, I’m moody, grouchy, stressed, sore, and wandering through life like I’m auditioning for The Walking Dead.

So I started digging into what the rest of the world is doing, and let me tell you — people are out here thriving.

Global Bedtime Wisdom That Low-Key Slaps

Scandinavia & Europe: Separate duvets. Not separate beds — just separate blankets. No cover-stealing, no temperature wars, no “stop hogging the comforter.” Honestly? Revolutionary.

Japan: Warm herbal baths before bed. Raises your body temp, then drops it, making you sleepy. As someone who loves a bubble bath, this feels like destiny.

Scotland: “Nuddling.” Yes, nuddling — the coziest word ever invented. It’s basically nesting under blankets like a happy little hedgehog. My daughter has been doing this for years with her heated blanket. She was ahead of her time.

Sweden: Gökotta — waking up early to hear the first bird sing. A mindful, nature‑loving start to the day. Honestly, that sounds like something I’d do once and then brag about for six months.

UK: Relaxing teas before bed. Chamomile, lavender, valerian root — the Brits are out here sipping serenity.

So What Can We Actually Do?

Studies say we should avoid long naps (tragic), get sunlight, move our bodies, cut back on caffeine and sugar, and follow a consistent bedtime routine. You know — all the things that sound easy until you actually try them.

But here’s the thing: I can work on some of this. I should try some of these global tricks. And yes… giving up falling asleep to Law & Order will be a challenge. But maybe — maybe — I’ll give it a try.

Because at the end of the day, I want to feel rested. I want to wake up without feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck. I want to stop being moody, grouchy, stressed, and wandering through life like a sleep-deprived zombie.

So here’s to new routines, cozy blankets, warm baths, sleepy teas, and maybe — just maybe — turning off the TV before Detective Benson solves the case.

A girl can dream… literally.
